Guidelines for RFID Implementation

Objectives

The purpose of this work package is to reduce information deficits by collecting and evaluating existing information for potential users of RFID. Between April 2006 and October 2007 RFID documents that could be regarded as guidelines or that have been regarded as guidelines by their respective authors were collected via the internet.

The documents included industry specific cost-benefit analyses and business models, case studies and similar collections of experiences with the implementation of RFID to potential users.

Definition of RFID guideline

In order to establish whether a document can be considered to be a guideline, the term “guideline” has been defined as follows:

“Guidelines are domain-specific documents assisting companies and organisations when implementing and using RFID systems with regard to possibly affected stakeholders. Such guidelines need to address specific concerns of entities within companies and organisations that implement or use RFID systems.”

Process of analysis

Following this definition, an evaluation process has been developed and applied to all documents:

If an RFID document was considered to be both domain- and application-specific, the document was categorised as an RFID guideline.  To see the documents categorised as RFID guidelines please click here.

If the document was found to be either only domain-specific or application-specific, it was categorised as an information document. To see the documents categorised as RFID information documents please click here.

Outcome of the analysis

The research into existing RFID guidelines by the means of a content analysis and the discussions in the course of the project have shown that most RFID guidelines are of no practical value for companies and other users planning to employ RFID technology. The major problem is that, due to the vast diversity of RFID applications and technological solutions, even industry-specific guidelines can be too broad to be useful guidelines. RFID Implementation Checklist

Therefore an RFID Implementation Checklist was created. This checklist attempts to list all relevant points that have to be considered by different addressees within the user company. This checklist therefore serves as the basis for the elaboration of an application-specific guideline for the RFID project within the company or other user entities.
